YouTube subscribers are the bread and butter of any successful channel. These regular viewers can maximize your organic reach and give you a consistent base level of views every time you post new content.

If your goal is to make money on YouTube, reaching subscriber milestones is essential. For example, you need at least 1,000 subscribers to become a YouTube partner and start generating advertising revenue. And the more subscribers you have, the higher you move up the YouTube “profit level” scale (think: rewards, managers, and production support, out of 100,000 subscribers).

What if you plan to use YouTube for your branding and marketing, instead of making money outright? You still need subscribers. They are increasing their number of views, their watch time and their engagement, all important signals to the YouTube algorithm.

Your first 100 subscribers, for example, allow you to create a custom URL for your channel. Reach 1,000 subscribers and meet one of the requirements to be part of the YouTube Partner Program.

On top of that, YouTube’s algorithm places great importance on engagement, and subscribers are more likely to engage with you as a creator.

They will be the first to see your new content, (in theory) they are more likely to comment and more likely to share the content with their friends who share similar interests. The more engaged your content is, the more YouTube will consider it a trustworthy video, and the more likely it is to show that video at the top of search results for new viewers to discover your channel.

Another benefit of participating in the partner program is monetization. Once you’ve crossed the threshold of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 cumulative viewing hours on your channel, you can collect ad revenue from video, overlay, and display ads.

And it doesn’t stop there: With 1,000 subscribers, you can also offer channel subscriptions, and 10,000 subscribers allow you to offer fan-branded products on your reading pages.

Now that you understand why subscribers are important, let’s take a look at how to grow your subscriber base organically, so that you can reap the rewards of your own fan base.

How to get YouTube subscribers:

If you’re just getting started, check out our guide to creating a YouTube channel. You should have the chain basics in place before diving into the tips below.

Here, in order from easy to difficult, are our best practices for converting viewers to subscribers. Don’t go near all of them at eleven. Try one of these tips for every new video you post, or apply one or two a week.

1. Ask your viewers to subscribe.

There is nothing easier than that.

Sometimes your audience just needs to be reminded.

Is it too advantageous for you to request the subscription? It can be, if you request it too early or too often. But a quick reminder to subscribe at the end of your video just makes it easier for fans to follow the work you’re doing.

Don’t forget to demonstrate why your channel is worth subscribing to. Make sure to request a subscription only after providing useful new information or making viewers laugh.

2. Finish your video by showing what you are working on next.

Subscribing to a YouTube channel is an act of anticipation. Viewers who have just seen what your brand is about are willing to want more if you’ve done your job right.

Promoting your next video and explaining why it shouldn’t be missed is the most organic way to get people to subscribe.

Of course, that requires having a good understanding of your content schedule and knowing what’s next. (More on this soon).

3. Verify your Google account

By default, all YouTube users can download videos up to 15 minutes long. If you want to create content for a longer time, you will need to verify your account.

Since longer videos give you more options for the types of content you can create, this is an important step for anyone looking to build a professional channel.

To verify your account, go to www.youtube.com/verify on your computer (not a mobile device) and follow the instructions.

Once you verify your account, you can download videos up to 256GB or 12 hours.

4. Interact with your audience and create a community.

If you build relationships with your viewers, they are more likely to want to keep seeing your work. Respond to the comments. If creators subscribe to your channel, follow them and watch their videos.

Think of your channel as a community and make sure you are an active member, not just someone offering content from above.

If you pay attention to the comments, your audience will also provide you with lots of free content ideas.

Saying more comments can seem like a daunting task. If you manage your YouTube presence with Hootsuite, you can add comment feeds to your Hootsuite dashboard. This makes it easy to review, reply, and / or moderate comments on all of your videos from one place.

5. Create an effective channel branding

Channel branding is an important way for viewers to know who you are and what to expect from your channel.

Banner art

Your YouTube banner welcomes everyone who clicks on your channel. Maybe they just watched one video and are looking for more. You can be a potential subscriber.

Make sure they know where they are and why they should stay.

Your banner needs to be clean, branded, attractive and, this is the tricky part, optimized for all devices. You don’t want social media buttons to cover important details, for example.

Chain icon

Your channel icon is basically your YouTube logo. It appears on your channel page and everywhere you comment on YouTube. Make sure it clearly represents you and your brand, and is easy to recognize, even when it’s small.

This text appears on the About page of your YouTube channel. You have a maximum of 1000 characters to describe your channel and explain to viewers why they should subscribe. We have a comprehensive blog post on how to write effective YouTube descriptions to get you started.

Custom url

This … is not ideal. Fortunately, you can edit it using a custom URL. In YouTube Studio, choose Personalization from the menu on the left, then click Basic Info and scroll down to the channel URL.

The problem is, you need to get at least 100 subscribers before you can claim a custom URL. If you haven’t already, put it at the top of your to-do list when you reach your first subscriber milestone.

6. Add a custom channel trailer

YouTube’s personalization settings allow you to take full advantage of the featured video space at the top of your channel page. You can choose to show the video to existing subscribers and something else to unsubscribed viewers.

For non-subscribers, create a channel trailer that lets people know what they can expect from your channel and why they should subscribe.

7. Mark your thumbnails

A thumbnail is a 1280 x 720px still image that serves as the cover for your video. Think of it as a mini movie poster. This is your first and best chance to persuade someone to click on your video. (Outside of his video titles, of course, but we’ll get to that later.)

We are not talking about getting YouTube views today (we have a different article for that), so why mention it here? Because consistent professional vignettes are another part of your channel branding. They can help new viewers learn more about who you are as a creator.

Aim for a consistent brand across all your thumbnails. Use the same font, color scheme, or even frame construction to let people know (subconsciously at least) that they are watching a video from your channel.

8. Use YouTube’s subscription tools that are clickable on your videos.

YouTube has some built-in clickable tools to help you convert video viewers into channel subscribers.

You can also go back and add end screens to existing videos, which can be a great way to start converting subscribers right away from your existing content.

To add an ending screen to an existing video, click Content in the left menu of Creator Studio, then select the video you want to add an ending screen to. Click the End Screen box on the right side of the screen and add a Subscribe item to your video.

Brand watermark

This is an additional subscribe button that will be located in the lower right corner of your video. You can choose when the watermark appears during your videos.

To add the watermark, click Personalization in the YouTube Studio left menu, and then select Brand. The watermark will now appear on all of your videos.

9. Think in terms of playlists

Playlists are a great way to increase your channel’s watch time. Like a Netflix series, a YouTube playlist automatically plays a set of videos in a set order. The viewer does not have to actively click on the next video, they sit back and let the content continue to appear.

Think of each playlist as its own mini-channel or as an ongoing series. If someone watches a few videos in a row and enjoys them all, they have many reasons to subscribe and get more.

Playlists appear, unsurprisingly, on your channel’s Playlists tab.

10. Show your content strategically on your channel page.

From YouTube Studio’s Design tab, you can add up to 12 sections to your channel home page. This allows you to show your best content upfront, so that new visitors see your best creations while they think about whether to hit the Subscribe button.

You can also use sections to view the playlists you created in the last tip. Use playlists specifically geared towards the needs of different viewers to highlight the great value you offer right from the start.

11. Post videos on a consistent schedule

People subscribe to a channel because they want to see new content from the creator. As a creator, your job is to deliver consistent, quality content that retains existing subscribers and encourages new viewers to participate.

Think of it as the equivalent of your TV time slot. You want people to look forward to your next “episode” and subscribe so they never miss the latest episode.

Fortunately, you don’t have to commit to always being at your desk when your videos should be posted. You can use a social media management platform like Hootsuite to schedule your YouTube videos for later posting. For more details, check out our guide to scheduling videos on YouTube.

12. Engage your audience from other social media channels.

This means cross-promotion on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, wherever you have an established fan community. It can be as simple as encouraging people to view your YouTube channel on your Instagram or Twitter bio.

Posting a preview of your latest video is another great way to attract people to your YouTube channel from other social accounts. Instagram Stories are great for this as you can offer a preview or preview of your video and lead people to it with a simple slider link.

13. Collaborate with other creators

It goes back to council n. # 4: Build a community. Use your connections to find other YouTube creators to collaborate with so they can access their respective audiences. After all, your audience trusts your recommendations, and your audience trusts yours.

Once you start building an audience, your followers can suggest potential collaborations. Until then, explore YouTube on your own to find potential contributors in your field. If you find someone who looks promising, contact them.
